Being able to read and spell high-frequency words is necessary for fluent reading and writing. Please open the attachment below for a list of 1st grade words. Practice reading and writing the words in meaningful sentences and illustrations. Keep this list handy and have your child refer to it when reading or writing. Please avoid drills with flash cards

Have nightly math talk...

"How many lines do you see?
How do you see them?"

Subitizing means to instantly recognize a quantity without counting. This is one of the most important foundational skills for our students. Download FREE copies of the these images and practice daily until your child is super fast! Flash the card for only 3 seconds and cover it up. Ask the two questions above,  Then ask your child how she knew the number. This is critical! For example, does she count up from 1 (2,3,4,5)? Does he look at the 4 and count up 1? Is she counting all the lines (1,2,3,4,5) individually ? Or does she know that a group of 4 and a group of 1 make 5? These all indicate very different levels of understanding of numbers.  We need your support to develop strong number sense.  Please print the free resources below.
